{"id":6003,"date":"2015-08-06T16:43:25","date_gmt":"2015-08-06T08:43:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/weiling-gallery.com\/gallery\/?post_type=portfolio&amp;p=6003"},"modified":"2015-08-06T16:43:25","modified_gmt":"2015-08-06T08:43:25","slug":"art-face-to-face-by-vimala-seneviratne","status":"publish","type":"portfolio","link":"https:\/\/dev08.mm-sb.com\/web04\/portfolio-item\/art-face-to-face-by-vimala-seneviratne\/","title":{"rendered":"Art: Face to face by Vimala Seneviratne"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id='artists-title'  class='avia-section av-av_section-142ff43b7600746a6e970fde5cf91c57 main_color avia-section-default avia-no-border-styling  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  avia-bg-style-scroll  container_wrap fullsize'  ><div class='container av-section-cont-open' ><main  role=\"main\" itemprop=\"mainContentOfPage\"  class='template-page content  av-content-full alpha units'><div class='post-entry post-entry-type-page post-entry-6003'><div class='entry-content-wrapper clearfix'>\n<div class='flex_column av-av_one_full-2a9015ff38129c418a3f2eafba3e9512 av_one_full  avia-builder-el-1  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  first flex_column_div '   ><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '  style='font-size:14px; '  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-family: open sans thin; font-size: 25px; line-height: 24px; letter-spacing: 1px; color: #333333;\">New Straits Times, 10 April 2010<br \/>\nArt: Face to face<br \/>\nby Vimala Seneviratne<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 24px; color: #666666; text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Six Malaysian artists in an exhibition called Heads Up draw inspiration from the enchantment of the human face, writes Vimala Seneviratne.<\/p>\n<p>Contemporary artist Marvin Chan Yew Soon has a fascination for faces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day we meet people going about their lives, doing very ordinary things, but each harbouring life experiences and emotions that are in fact a story summarised on their faces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what portrait painting is all about.<\/p>\n<p>A subtle communication of expressions on the face,\u201d says the KL born and bred Chan.<br \/>\nHe is among six artists whose portrait paintings are on display at Wei Ling Gallery in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/weiling-gallery.com\/gallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hu-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5978 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/weiling-gallery.com\/gallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hu-6-291x300.jpg\" alt=\"Chong Choon Woon - Face II (2010) | Oil on canvas; 124cm x 120cm\" width=\"291\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The exhibition, entitled Heads Up, also features works by Chong Choon Woon, Ng Bee, Kim Ng, Mohammad Al-Khuzairie Ali and Chee Eng Hong.<\/p>\n<p>Using bold strokes, Chan\u2019s subjects are those he meets on a regular basis, people who have made a strong impression on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one here,\u201d he says pointing to a portrait of a man with a broad smile, \u201cis my barber Suguman, and the other person is his assistant Prakash.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of the rare occasions when they smile as most of the time they are arguing about what hairstyle suits me.\u201d<br \/>\nThere is also the wantan noodle seller Ah Fatt and his wife, the DVD seller Ah Hou as well as others he meets at cafes and coffeeshops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are all ordinary people who are beautiful and through my paintings I have tried to capture their emotions, their true spirit.,\u201d says the 39-year-old self-taught artist who found his calling only six years ago, after having spent 14 years in the advertising industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always had a passion for painting and I guess I finally found the courage to make the switch.\u201d<br \/>\nChan who had his first solo exhibition three years ago in Penang, is a recipient of the Freeman Fellowship 2010 where he will be attached to an arts school in Vermont, USA, for one month.<\/p>\n<p>While Chan captures the natural expression of his subject\u2019s face, Chee Eng Hong prefers the abstract approach &#8211; distorted and exaggerated facial expressions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6006\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/weiling-gallery.com\/gallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hu-nst1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6006\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6006\" src=\"http:\/\/weiling-gallery.com\/gallery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hu-nst1.jpg\" alt=\"Chee prefers the abstract approach.
